CEE at a Glance

History

The history of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) can be traced back to 1937 when the Government Trade School opened. The School was reopened in 1947 after World War II and was renamed Hong Kong Technical College, which subsequently was renamed as Hong Kong Polytechnic and then The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1972 and 1994 respectively. In 1967, the Department of Building, Surveying & Structural Engineering was developed from the Building Department. As a result of its steady growth, it was re-structured into two departments in 1973, one of which was the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering. In September 2012, the department was renamed as Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Objectives of our Department

To offer good quality continuing professional training programmes, in addition to full-time academic programmes, to update the knowledge of practising civil, structural and environmental engineers.
To undertake fundamental and applied research to underpin the academic programmes.
To provide research related consultancy services to local and overseas communities.
To collaborate with local and non-local institutions with complementary strengths to further enhance its research capability.

Our People

The Department comprises a distinguished team of academic staff dedicated to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervising MPhil and PhD students, and leading pioneering research and community projects. They are affiliated to five academic units, including Construction & Transportation Unit, Environmental Engineering Unit, Geotechnical Engineering Unit, Hydraulic Engineering Unit and Structural Engineering Unit. To support world-class education and innovation, the Department manages an extensive network of laboratories and research centres.

The Department has also appointed Honorary Professors, Adjunct Professors and Adjunct Associate Professors from the industry and academia, enriching our curriculum with diverse perspectives and professional expertise.

MPhil: 2-year full-time / 4-year part-time
PhD (3-year full-time / 6-year part-time): For applicants holding an MPhil or equivalent qualification (with a dissertation as an award requirement).
PhD (4-year full-time / 8-year part-time): For applicants holding a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent qualification).
