We are thrilled to share that the Department of Architecture (ARCH) has officially made its debut participation in the PolyU FCE 'Build a Smart City Competition 2026'. This signature event, driven by the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE), kick-started in late June with a series of activities aimed at nurturing the next generation of urban innovators. The competition has reached out to every secondary school or college within Hong Kong, and over 30 passionate students eager to participate and explore architectural project, namely 'Designing a Smart Architecture with innovative Building Technology and Material', in ARCH’s specialised two-day workshop.
On the first day (26 June 2026), Prof. Tris Kee, Programme Leader of BSc Architectural Studies, delivered an inspiring talk on the role of Architecture in Urban Environments and sustainability in smart cities. She introduced young minds to the foundational concepts of smart architecture and explained how creative design can seamlessly merge with technological innovation to address real-world community issues. Following the lecture, students engaged in experiential learning through hands-on prototyping sessions, working with model-making STEM materials, such as basswood craft sticks, a base board, and some precision laser-cut pieces to construct physical design mock-ups. To complement this physical exercise with a digital spatial experience, the students visited the Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE) facility at the Industrial Centre of PolyU. This state-of-the-art facility allows them to interact directly with virtual surroundings and 3D Building Information Models (BIM), visualizing firsthand simulations on how their architectural concepts translate into immersive digital realities.
On the second day (3 July 2026), this comprehensive learning experience moved beyond the campus to feature an exclusive tour of The Henderson in Central, giving students first-hand exposure to world-class, future-ready sustainable design landmarks. The eight participating teams are now actively developing innovative, sustainable landscape models that balance aesthetic appeal with social and cultural enrichment.
ARCH is immensely proud of these young minds as they prepare for the upcoming Presentation Day in late August, where they will formally pitch their creative architectural visions to a panel of professional judges consisting of practicing architects and members of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA).
